What is the basement membrane?

Located between the dermis and epidermis, the basement membrane is where new epidermal skin cells are born. These are called basal cells. When this basement membrane is healthy and intact, the epidermis receives all the new basal cells. The basement membrane functions as a conductor of various signals and delivery of all nutrients to the epidermis from the dermis. It also contains collagen type-6 which is responsible for giving structural support to the epidermis.

An unhealthy basement membrane cannot adequately supply new cells and nutrients to the epidermis and is deficient in collagen. The result is a thinning of the skin, formation of fine lines, wrinkles, laxity, discoloration, decreased barrier function and local immune response, increased side effects to UV exposure, free radicals, and increased exposure to toxins which all contribute to accelerating the aging process even more.

The elasticity of the skin depends on the quality and integrity of the basement membrane.

Treatment
