Pearl® Fractional Laser Treatment at Westside Laser & Light in SW Calgary
Advanced laser skin resurfacing for improving deeper wrinkles and acne scars
REPAIR YEARS OF DAMAGE TO YOUR SKIN IN A SINGLE TREATMENT
The Pearl® Fractional laser treatment was created to offer patients significant improvement for deeper imperfections like wrinkles and acne scars and was intended to be an alternative to CO2 lasers (known to be effective yet risks).
This treatment is both fractional and ablative. Pearl Fractional was designed to treat deeper into the skin, to the depth of the wrinkles or scarring, to stimulate the repairative processes. As an ablative laser, Pearl Fractional can do more in a single treatment than nonablative laser options.
Pearl Fractional can be performed on the whole face or where there is significant improvement sought. When using Pearl Fractional for spot-treatments, we recommend combining with the regular Pearl treatment on the whole face for the desired results.
Pearl Fractional has a significant degree of downtime and can vary for many reasons but should be considered as 2 weeks or more. This laser is only safe for lighter skinned patients. Darker patients should consider Fraxel Dual.
Pearl Fractional and Pearl Fusion
Fractional ablative lasers offer the most improvement for deeper imperfections such as wrinkles and acne scars.
Often we will spot-treat with Pearl Fractional only where deeper laser stimulation is required. This could be just the cheeks for improving acne scarring, for example. For an improvement in wrinkles, we may focus on those areas around the eyes or upper lip, where those are most dominant.
For the best cosmetic result, we may recommend using a second laser with the original Pearl on the entire face. This will blend any lines of demarcation where deeper treatment occurred and provide an overall rejuvenation to the face.
The combination of Pearl and Pearl Fractional is known as Pearl Fusion.

PEARL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is “social” downtime?
Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure. With “social” downtime, you can continue your normal daily activities. However, you may not wish to attend important social events because your face will appear pink/red for 3-5 days.
How does a Pearl treatment feel?
The Pearl treatment feels like a series of brief pinches. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing pain, most patients report the treatment feeling like a 2 or 3. Some patients find the treatment excrutiating, however. We apply a special topical numbing cream prior to treatment which is usually very effective for most patients. In addition, we use a high-speed air chiller which allows for a more comfortable treatment. We will discuss pain-management strategies with you during a free consultation to provide additional options or information about the experience.
When will I see results?
Results of smoother skin are apparent immediately after your treated layer of skin has sloughed off, usually day 3-4. Brown spots are often gone completely at this stage. Full results are evident after 60-90 days.
How soon can I wear make-up after a Pearl treatment?
Results are noticeable by day 3 or 4 when the superficial tissue has peeled off, revealing fresh, bright, healthy skin underneath. Make-up may be applied at this time.
How many treatments are recommended?
Some patients may require two treatments spaced approximately one month apart to achieve the desired results. Other patients may need only one treatment.
Can Pearl be part of a combination therapy treatment?
Yes, patients may choose to have a Pearl treatment combined with other procedures such as Exilis Ultra, LimeLight, Genesis as well as fillers or Botox. When considering combination therapies, be sure to discuss with your practitioner as sequencing the order of procedures is important.
How does Pearl compare to other laser treatments?
Pearl offers the most effective treatment to address fine lines, uneven texture and discoloration without wound care and the lengthy downtime with certain Erbium and CO2 laser procedures.
Compared to today’s fractionated technologies, Pearl’s results are more superficial. For deeper issues like wrinkles and acne scars, fractional laser may be recommended in conjunction with the Pearl. For darker skin types, we recommend Fraxel or a non-laser option of micro-needling for your safety.
Who is a candidate for a Pearl treatment?
Patients with light to medium skin tones and mild to moderate sun damage are the ideal candidates.
