At last, a new treatment for Rosecea

Rosacea: Laser Genesis combined with LimeLight IPL

Rosacea: Laser Genesis combined with LimeLight IPL

Our sunny, windy, dry Southern Alberta climate here in Calgary can wreak havoc on your skin.

Those suffering from the condition known as ROSACEA are more troubled by our ever-changing weather patterns here and we tend to see a fair amount of people looking for some for of relief.

 What Is Rosacea?

WHO HAS ROSACEA

imagesRosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) is a common but poorly understood disorder of the facial skin that is estimated to affect well over 16 million Americans — and most of them don’t know it. In fact, while rosacea is becoming increasingly widespread as the populous baby boom generation enters the most susceptible ages, a National Rosacea Society survey found that 95 percent of rosacea patients had known little or nothing about its signs and symptoms prior to their diagnosis. SOURCE: Rosacea.org

At Westside Laser & Light, our comprehensive treatment plan for Rosacea uses a combination of Laser Genesis(R) treatments, medical grade skin care and a new skin care pill providing internal antioxidant support by GliSODin(R) Skin Nutrients.

The lasers have been very effective on their with alleviating Rosacea but we are excited about the GliSODin antioxidant for Rosacea because of its amazing effects on INFLAMMATION. The patient-study below by Dr. Cory Goldberg shows 60 days of GliSODin only. The images may appear a little creepy but they clearly show tremendous benefit from the GliSODin. GliSODin’s key ingredient is SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase). SOD was discovered over 50 years ago and is regarded as “the enzyme of life” for its powerful antioxidant properties. Only recently has science discovered a way to ingest SOD orally without denaturing the enzyme. SOD is a powerful antioxidant because it neutralizes free radicals at a ratio of 1:1,000,000 compared to 1:1 as with normal superfoods such as blueberries and goji berries.

Fractional lasers improve treatment for nail fungus

The Calgary Laser Nail Clinic at Westside Laser & Light has been successfully treating nail fungus for over 4 years with the Cutera Genesis laser. Our experience has shown laser treatment to be very effective at treating nail fungus for the majority of patients. In our opinion, laser treatment is definitely the most effective treatment option available when comparing to oral and topical medications.

While many patients have successful outcomes with the Genesis Laser and topical medication alone, the concept of adding a fractional ablative laser treatment to create “tiny pipelines” in the nail was introduced to us earlier this year. The rationale here was that these tiny pipelines would enhance the delivery of topical medications to the nail bed where the fungus resides.

download

Toe nail fungus can be difficult to treat and results can vary from patient to patient. The fungus is present in ones environment which makes reinfection possible and can inhibit results. Age and health of the patients as well as diet and habits can also affect treatment results.

The following before image shows a patient’s nail who had several laser treatments prior to receiving the Pearl Fractional treatment. The after image was taken 6 weeks after a Pearl Fractional laser treatment.

These results are encouraging and great feedback that the addition of fractional laser is effective. We will keep up with this new protocol for treating nail fungus and continue to evaluate results. Price for the addtional treatment is $200.

For information on nail fungus or for a free consultatation, please call the office at 403-685-0110 or send us an email and we will contact you for an appointment.

What can you really do about spider veins?

If you’re not sure what spider veins are, or if you have them, spider veins are small, blue blood vessels visible underneath the skin. These can be a sign of poor circulation.

What’s the difference between varicose and spider veins?

  • Varicose veins are stretched-out veins, where blood has pooled. These veins are thick and protrude from the leg. These type of veins only occur when valves are not working properly.
  • Spider veins are small, blue blood vessels visible underneath the skin. These can be a sign of poor circulation.

“Spider veins generally only present a cosmetic concern and are caused by genetics, pregnancy, obesity, advanced age or inactivity.” — Jennifer Chwalek, Dermatologist

The obvious choice to preventing spider veins is a healthy diet and exercise, as with many skin problems, the solution starts on the inside. However, once you have them, laser treatments are your best bet in getting rid of them.

Westside Laser & Light uses the Cutera Coolglide Excel vascular laser for varicose and spider veins. This award-winning laser specializes in vein treatments and is unparalleled in safety and efficacy for treat both facial and leg veins. Using our technologically advanced procedures we can diminish both spider and varicose veins by using a highly concentrated beam of light. This treatment is much to be preferred over other vein treatments because it is minimally invasive, practically pain free and requires no general anesthesia.

What is the difference between Botox® and dermal fillers?

Patients frequently ask, Is there is a difference between neuromodulators like BOTOX® or Dysport® and dermal fillers such as Juvederm® and Revanesse®.   The answer is yes.

A neuromodulator such as BOTOX® or Dysport® reduces the activity of the muscles that cause wrinkles such as frown lines, worry lines and crow’s feet. A neuromodulator works by temporarily blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, thereby reducing muscle movement and causing wrinkles to relax and soften. botoxNeuromodulators are also used by experienced injectors to lift areas of the face and extend the life of some dermal filler applications. Neuromodulators are quick-acting, with results typically visible within 3-5 days, and lasting for 3-6 months. BOTOX® or Dysport® can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are a range of products that fill depleted facial features, and in many instances stimulate collagen growth.  We choose to use Revanesse®, Juvederm®, and Restylane® at Westside Laser & Light. Although each dermal filler has unique attributes, in general, most dermal fillers work in two ways. First, most of the fillers plump and lift the skin gently to replace collagen loss caused by the natural aging process. Secondly, most of the fillers also stimulate the body to produce its own natural collagen; some help more than others. Dermal fillers are used in a variety of ways to lift features of the face, correct wrinkles and to restore smoothness and volume to the skin. The effects of most fillers are nearly instantaneous.  Most of the dermal fillers last from several months to a year or two before touch up treatments are necessary to extend results.

Both neuromodulators and advanced dermal fillers are effective treatments, with each having an extensive history of proven results. Both treatments are effective separately, however many physicians choose to use them in conjunction with each other to achieve optimal results.

It’s Sun Awareness Week: How to Fight Sun Damage

This week is ‘Sun Awareness Week’, and with the weather finally cooperating, we’re all finding more excuses to spend time in the sun. Sunshine is a fantastic source of Vitamin D, which helps promote overall health and ward off mental and physical illness, but too much exposure to the sun (or unprotected exposure), can cause damage to our skin.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada. Many skin cancers can be prevented. The single most effective way to lower the risk of developing skin cancer is to reduce your exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). — Canadian Cancer Society

Most of the skin changes our body goes through over time, aren’t just a ‘normal part of aging’, but actually the result of sun exposure. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays cause damage to the elastin in our skin, which results in changes such as sagging, stretching, discolouration and wrinkles.

There are many different types of lasers and procedures that can be used to fight the signs of sun damage, and at Westside Laser and Light, we use only state-of-the-art equipment and treatments. Some of our most popular anti-aging treatment options include Laser Genesis Skin RejuvenationTitan Skin Tightening and our two newest treatments, Fraxel® Restore Dual and Pearl Fractional®

The laser treatment that is best-suited for you is something that should be discussed between yourself and a licensed medical practitioner, and that’s why we employ staff with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of medical aesthetics. Our staff is recognized as not only being personable, but able to keep you informed and at ease with any questions you have.

Sunscreen Day: How to Choose the Best Skin Protection

Today is Sunscreen Day, and it’s time to spread awareness about the importance of sunscreen to your skin and overall health.

In Canada, sunlight is strong enough to cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Sunscreen absorbs UV rays and prevents them from penetrating the skin. Make sure your sunscreen offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays (usually labelled “broad spectrum”). ~ Canadian Cancer Society

It’s important to wear sunscreen during the sunny months, but also to pick one that is meant for your skin type.

Here’s some tips:

  • SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93% of UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 and higher sunscreen blocks 97% of UVB rays.
  • For children’s skin: PABA and oxybenzone are examples of chemicals that have been known to irritate children’s skin. Sunscreens for those with sensitive skin and children usually contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which are safer for them.
  • For those with acne or rosacea: again, chemicals like PABA and oxybenzone can be harmful to your skin, as well as sunscreens with fragrances. Those with rosacea will also want to avoid sunscreens with alcohol, and those with acne will want to avoid oily sunscreens.
  • For those with dry skin: these skin types will benefit from sunscreens with moisturizers such as lanolin, oils and silicones.

Enjoy the spring and summer sun, and be safe!

The daily habits that could be ruining your skin

If your skin isn’t looking or feeling it’s best right now, there could be some everyday things you’re doing that are causing your skin to age faster than you want it to. Being aware of these five common culprits can add years back to your skin and give you that glow back.

  • Stress: many experts believe this is the number one cause of pre-aging to the skin. The fine lines around your face, are caused by stress, which is why they are called worry lines. You can deal with stress in many ways, but try things like: massage therapy, essential oils, epsom salt baths, reading, etc. Whatever you need to do to decompress.
  • Lack of sleep: in order for your skin cells to fully rejuvenate overnight, you need to be getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night. If that doesn’t sound like you, try putting yourself on a sleep schedule, after a few nights you should be on a proper regime.
  • Bad diet: fatty foods aren’t just bad for your waistline, they damage your skin too. Healthy skin starts from the inside, so make sure you’re not shorting yourself on vitamins and nutrients and be sure to drink lots of water every day. Your skin is 80 per cent water, so keep yourself hydrated.
  • Lacking sun protection: UV rays are highly damaging to your skin and will cause it to age faster. No matter what season it is, be sure to have SPF protection, especially on your face, which is exposed all year-round.
  • Using damaging products: skincare products with harsh chemicals will damage your skin over time and actually strip it of valuable particles. Try to use skincare products that are organic, and wash your face with mild soap rather than harsh cleansers.

If you want to learn how to reverse the signs of aging skin that have already appeared, find out about the treatments and services we offer, and as always we can answer any questions you may have.
